Children, who are fortunate enough to attend school, usually start their education around age 7. However, a lot of children never get to attend at all, for a variety of reasons, such as illness, the need to work at home, the inability to pay school fees or the lack of available schools.
The academic year in Uganda begins in February and ends in December. There are three terms in each school year lasting about 3 months each. During the school year, the students have about a three week break between each term.
All pupils must wear a school uniform with a badge showing the name of their school. Different schools will have different color and different styles of uniforms.
Nursery or pre-primary education does exist in Uganda but very few children attend it because many parents cannot afford the cost. There is no direct government control or provision at the pre-school level. There are also a limited number of teachers available especially in villages and very rural areas.
